Nothing takes the fun out of a BBQ faster than running out of food, or being left with trays of cold sausages nobody wanted. Here is how we work out quantities when customers ask us to plan their BBQ order at the counter.
A Simple BBQ Meat Calculator
For a mixed grill with sides, bread and a few salads on the table, we suggest:
| Guests | Total raw meat (approx) |
|---|---|
| 4 adults | 1.6kg to 2kg |
| 6 adults | 2.4kg to 3kg |
| 8 adults | 3.2kg to 4kg |
| 4 adults and 4 children | 2.6kg to 3.2kg |
As a rule of thumb, allow 400g to 500g of raw meat per adult and 250g to 300g per child. If you are a generous host, or you want leftovers for the next day, add another 10 to 20 per cent.
How Much of Each Type of Meat?
- Burgers: 1 to 2 per adult, 1 per child
- Sausages: 2 to 3 per adult, 1 to 2 per child
- Chicken portions or thighs: 1 to 2 per adult
- Kebabs: 1 to 2 per adult
- Ribs: around 250g to 300g per adult as part of a spread
A mix of two or three meats keeps everyone happy. Our BBQ selection covers burgers, kebabs, ribs and sausages, and our 40 piece BBQ hamper and 120 piece BBQ hamper are portioned out for you if you would rather skip the maths.
A Few Tips from the Counter
- Keep everything chilled until the coals are ready, and keep raw and cooked meat on separate plates with separate tongs.
- Cook in batches rather than piling the grill: the first batch feeds the hungry crowd while the rest cooks.
- Let sausages and burgers rest for a few minutes, off the heat but loosely covered, so the juices settle.
- Chicken portions need to be cooked through, with no pink meat and juices that run clear.
If you would rather leave the portions to us, order one of our BBQ hampers and choose delivery or collection from the shop.
